The transition to the new National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) is upon us, and fire and emergency response agencies stand to benefit substantially from the change. This class outlines the intent, process, progress, and benefits from this new and adaptable system that will replace the legacy NFIRS. From creating an all-hazards system to understanding more about the fire environment, NERIS is positioned to help firefighters and fire chiefs understand their communities and their deployment better than ever before. While understanding the new system and the transition taking place is important, this course will also focus on the cultural change that must take place to allow fire departments, big and small, to begin to embrace and depend on data to drive key information for change, resource allocation, and safety. This session will discuss the change that must take place to transform our fire departments to appropriately use data and information in 2025 and beyond by considering the benefit and influence of the communications professionals.
