This will be a practical tutorial to help both management and field operations personnel understand what they can reasonably expect from various communications technologies in different settings, now and into the future. The benefits and challenges of LMR and cellular will be addressed. Emerging technologies will enable interoperability and enhancements across these platforms along with newer ones. Present and future technologies will extend coverage through boosters and mesh networks, provide improved geolocation, provide remote sensors, remotely piloted vehicles and Non-Terrestrial Networks. These all require a practical understanding of how to select, coordinate, test, operate and ensure effective operations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Familiarize the audience with land mobile radio and cellular radio systems, their capabilities, limitations and fault modes. Describe the types of communications content that land mobile radio and cellular radio systems can provide and what happens when the infrastructure breaks down.
  2. Provide an understanding of how land mobile radio and cellular radio systems can be made to interoperate in the network and in the field along with the benefits and limitations of each approach. Identify three methods of interoperability methods and where they would be most useful.
  3. Provide an overview-level of understanding of existing proven, newly available and future capabilities in land mobile radio and 5G Advanced and 6G communications systems. Name three technologies and when you would and would not use them.
